Sir Tom Jones

Arguably the most famous person in relation to the history of Pontypridd Y.M.C.A. is Sir Tom Jones. Born in Treforest in June 1940 Tom spent the first 24 years of his life in and around the town of Pontypridd.

After leaving school at 15 Tom started working in a local factory and singing around clubs at night. These included Pontypridd Y.M.C.A. on Fridays, and Working Men's clubs on Saturdays, as well as local Dance Halls and sometimes Pubs.

Tom recorded his first Number 1 It's Not Usual in 1965, and recorded numerous other hits before going on to land a successful T.V. show. Soon after Tom found fame in the United States.

In 2005 Tom performed in Ponty Park to celebrate his 65th birthday and 40 years in Show Business in front of 25,000 fans and friends. Soon after in 2006 he became Sir Tom Jones when he was knighted by the Queen for services to entertainment.
